Like WD40 for your spine! Chiropractic’s age defying benefits.

Chiropractic is Age Defying?!

Most people believe that as you get older, the less flexible you become. Actually, it’s the other way around. The stiffer your joints get, the faster you age and develop disease!

As we’ve discussed before, many people think an increase in pain as they age is normal. In a classic 1921 study tracing terminal disease and its relationship to spinal degeneration, Henry Windsor, MD concluded, “Disease appears to precede old age and to cause it. The spine becomes stiff first and old age follows. Therefore we may say, a man is as old as his spine; the arteries becoming hardened later from constant vasomotor spasm, following sympathetic irritation.”

Chiropractic adjustments act like WD40 for your spine – keeping your joints flexible, your organs youthful and your health potential at its maximum. If you want to win the battle against time, make regular Chiropractic a part of your age defying routine.

If you’re interested in keeping your body young and mobile, call Contreras Chiropractic for your free consultation at 925-606-5490.

ADD, ADHD, and Chiropractic – How Chiropractic may reduce the symptoms of ADD/ADHD

Throughout the month of March, we’re spotlighting the effects of chiropractic on symptoms of Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. While chiropractors do not “treat” ADD/ADHD, the effects of chiropractic care on children diagnosed with these learning disorders and hyperactivity have been a subject of scientific research and scholarly publications for many years.

There is a lot of information on ADD, ADHD, and chiropractic’s ability to help reduce the symptoms, but we’ll give you the highlights below. For more detailed information, call Contreras Chiropractic at (925) 606-5490.

In our last blog, we covered some of the basics of ADD and ADHD - we defined the disorder, gave a (very) brief history, shared the most common treatments, and some emerging alternative treatments. Among some of the most promising alternative treatments for ADD/ADHD is Chiropractic Care.

Although the need for more scientific research is growing, case after case after case after  case after case can be found of patients diagnosed with ADD/ADHD, whose symptoms were reduced with chiropractic care.

ADD, ADHD, and Chiropractic – How?

“We test children before they start the treatment and then every three months,” says Dr. Melillo. “Within the first three months, the children get a two-grade-level increase on average—which is pretty dramatic. With children on medications, the improvement in academic performance is short term and lasts only as long as they take the medication. Our programs change the brain function and the improvement doesn’t go away.” [src]

As we’ve stated before, chiropractors don’t “treat” ADD/ADHD – so how have so many patients seen such great results in reducing their symptoms? Chiropractors fix subluxations – or  interference in your nervous system. Commonly referred to as a “pinched nerve”, a subluxation blocks or weakens messages sent from the brain to the body and vice versa. The brain can overcompensate for this, and begin to “rapid-fire” messages to the body. This could result in the hyperactive, fidgety, lack of concentration symptoms associated with ADD/ADHD. By adjusting the spine back into it’s proper alignment, a Dr. Contreras can remove subluxations and allow for a properly functioning nervous system.

If you or your child experience hyperactive symptoms, chiropractic may be able to help you. Call Contreras Chiropractic today, and talk to our staff about your situation at (925) 606-5490.

ADD/ADHD and Chiropractic – Hope, Naturally – Reducing Symptoms of ADD/ADHD

Defining the “Disorder”

chiropractor Livermore ADD/ADHD and Chiropractic Hope, Naturally Reducing Symptoms of ADD/ADHD

“Researchers made a giant leap in logic: Because brain injury can lead to hyperactivity, they believed that all hyperactivity was caused by brain injury.”

Attention Deficit Disorder is often broken into two categories – ADD without Hyperactivity, and with Hyperactivity (often referred to as ADHD). ADD alone is characterized by low brain energy, daydreaming, avoidance and procrastination. ADHD is correlated with impulsivity, hyperactivity, and/or inattention. There are a number of positive attributes associated with both disorders, including creativity and enthusiasm. The criteria for diagnosing these “disorders” are highly subjective, as there is no test, result, or specific set of symptoms that result in the diagnosis. Food and/or environmental allergies tend to be present in patients with ADD and ADHD.

A (very) Brief History

In the early 1900′s, scientists began to study hyperactive children. It became clear that brain injuries caused hyperactivity in some patients; however researchers assumed that all hyperactivity was caused by brain damage. There are a growing number of ADD experts who have begun to view ADD not as a disorder, but as a natural condition in which the patient is left at a disadvantage in common modern settings.

“At first psychiatrists called hyperactivity a brain disease. When no brain disease could be found, they changed it to ‘minimal brain disease’ (MBD). When no minimal brain disease could be found the profession transformed the concept into ‘minimal brain dysfunction.’ When no minimal brain dysfunction could be demonstrated, the label became attention deficit disorder. Now it’s just assumed to be a real disease, regardless of the failure to prove it so. Biochemical imbalance is the code word, but there’s no more evidence for that than there is for actual brain disease.” Psychiatrist Peter Breggin

Today, as high as 9.5% of school-aged children are diagnosed with ADD or ADHD. The number of children diagnosed with these disorders has risen 66% in the last year alone.

Common Treatments for the “Disorder”

The most common treatments for ADD and ADHD are the prescription drugs Adderall and Ritalin. In the last nine years, the production of Adderall and Dexedrine (also used to treat ADHD), has risen 2,000%!

Mild side effects of these psycotropic drugs can include headaches, increased anxiety, loss of appetite and weight loss, vision problems, dizziness, restlessness, and abdominal pain and discomfort. Insomnia and nervousness are very common and highly reported.

Serious side effects range from personality altering to life threatening. Development of anorexia, Tourette’s syndrome, and depression have been linked to the use of Adderall and Ritalin. Users are also subject to extreme nervousness and paranoid delusions, mood swings that may include hostility and severe aggression, and toxic psychosis. The medication can also result in a dangerous increase in blood pressure, an irregular heart beat, seizures, or loss of consciousness.

Alternative Treatments and a New Hope

Many pediatricians and psychiatrists now suggest an Elimination Diet can significantly reduce the symptoms of ADHD. In a study published in 2011 Lancet Journal, a diet free of processed foods significantly reduced the symptoms of ADHD in 78% of 4-8 year old children [src].

Recently, chiropractic has been gaining a lot of attention as an alternative treatment for ADD/ADHD. Several studies have shown that ADD/ADHD children who undergo regular chiropractic adjustments experience a significant reduction in symptoms, often significant enough to discontinue medication [src]. How? Keep an eye out for next week’s blog where we’ll go into more detail on HOW and WHY chiropractic has been shown to reduce ADD/ADHD symptoms.

There is no guarantee that chiropractic can reduce your’s or your child’s ADD/ADHD symptoms. Consultations are always free at Contreras Chiropractic! For more information, call (925) 606-5490 or attend our free Hope, Naturally event on March 19, 2013 at 6:30.

Food Intolerance and your “Healthy Diet”

chiropractor Livermore Food Intolerance and your Healthy Diet

Most patients at Contreras Chiropractic are health minded – they take care of their bodies so that they can function at 100%. Along with regular adjustments, they tend lead active lifestyles and eat healthy diets. However new research shows that a “healthy diet” may not be healthy for everyone. A food intolerance to “health foods” such as chicken, lean fish, and even vegetables, is not as uncommon as one would think!

Food Allergy vs. Food Intolerance

Food Allergies are a common occurrence in today’s society, affecting nearly 15 million Americans. The foods that cause 90% of food allergies are milk, egg, peanut, tree nuts, fish, shellfish, wheat, and soy. 1 An allergy to a food is caused by the immune system mistakenly attacking a food protein. Reactions can range from mild (a rash, itching, swelling, etc.) to severe (difficulty breathing or swallowing, wheezing, etc.), and can potentially be fatal. 2 These symptoms generally appear suddenly, within minutes to two hours after the person has eaten or been exposed to the food that they are allergic to. A reaction can be triggered by a small amount, and happens every time the person eats the food.

Food Intolerance can be more difficult to identify. The symptoms tend to come on gradually, and may only happen if you eat large portions or eat the food often. The intolerance is not life threatening, and is brought on when your stomach or body can’t properly digest the food (because of an enzyme deficiency, poor digestive tract function, or sensitivity to a natural or synthetic chemical). Symptoms tend to affect mainly the stomach and digestive system – resulting in gas, cramping, bloating, heartburn, headaches, irritability or nervousness, but can manifest in other forms as well. 3 The reaction is often delayed, several hours to several days after the food is eaten.

Why a Food Intolerance may be making you more sick

Hidden food intolerance is believed to be the cause of a “variety of common health complaints and diseases”. 4 Due to the delayed reaction, patients are often treated for the symptoms - which can range from sinus congestion to ear infections, asthma to depression – rather than recognizing the cause. These “treatments” usually include courses of medication, adding unnecessary chemicals to your body.  By identifying food intolerance, and adjusting your diet accordingly, most patients report a decrease in symptoms they had never associated with their diet (better memory, less anxiety, fewer headaches, etc.). More and more scientific research is finding food intolerances are the cause of conditions such as migraines, irritable bowel syndrome, asthma, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and arthritis. 5 So although you may be eating “healthy”, a hidden food intolerance to chicken, lettuce, or other health food, may be causing unwanted symptoms!

Recognizing a Food Intolerance

An emerging trend in nutrition is the “Elimination Diet”. During this several month long process, a patient’s diet will be eliminated of the most common allergens (wheat, soy, dairy, citrus, fish, caffeine, and artificial food additives, among others). The patient will then face “food challenges”, as an allergen is reintroduced into their diet, and then observe any symptoms that appear. This long and rigorous process is encouraged to be led by a health practitioner. Critics of the process state that the “elimination diet” is not accurate, as it depends on the patient recognizing all adverse symptoms.

Here at Contreras Chiropractic, we are proud to offer a faster, and more effective alternative. ALCAT testing is a simple blood test which identifies your body’s intolerances to 200 of the most common food items. Results are available via web just 5 days after the tests have been completed, and will include a full description of your severe and mild intolerances.

To schedule your ALCAT test, or request more information, call Contreras Chiropractic at (925) 606-5490.
